As of August 2024, the mpox outbreak has impacted several countries, particularly in Africa and some parts of Europe and Asia. The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has been the most affected, with over 16,839 reported cases and 570 deaths, making up 96% of the global total. Other African countries like Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda have also reported cases, with the virus spreading quickly across the region. In Europe, Sweden and Spain have seen cases, while in Asia, Taiwan and Thailand have confirmed infections linked to travel to affected areas.
Globally, the outbreak continues to show low-level transmission in regions outside Africa, but the situation remains serious in Central and East Africa, where the virus has become more widespread.
