Visual Testing of Fusion-Welded Joints: Inspection Records and Review Checks

Review status: Qualified welding/NDT review is required before publication. This draft does not reproduce a welding code or acceptance table.

Scope of visual testing

ISO 17637:2016 identifies visual testing of fusion welds in metallic materials as its subject and notes that visual testing may also be applied to the joint before welding. That scope does not, by itself, select the project’s governing code, inspection personnel qualification, acceptance criteria, or the need for another NDT method.

Inspection record structure

  • Joint, drawing, weld, welder, procedure, and inspection-stage identifiers.
  • Applicable code/specification, edition, acceptance basis, and inspection extent.
  • Surface condition, access, lighting or viewing limitations, and the condition of the joint before welding where applicable.
  • Observed indications described in objective terms with location and extent, without inventing a disposition threshold.
  • Disposition, repair/re-inspection link, inspector identity, date, instrument or aid used, and record revision.

Review sequence

  1. Confirm that the correct joint and revision are being inspected.
  2. Confirm that the inspection stage and governing acceptance basis are known.
  3. Record observable conditions before interpreting them.
  4. Escalate any indication whose significance depends on the governing code, loading, joint category, or specialist judgment.
  5. Keep repair and re-inspection records linked to the original report.

What this article does not claim

It does not claim that a visual observation is acceptable or rejectable across all projects. Acceptance depends on the selected code, specification, joint category, service condition, inspection extent, and qualified personnel. The full ISO and AWS documents must be consulted by the responsible specialist.

Specialist review questions

  • Which welding code and edition govern the work?
  • Which visual-testing qualification and inspection extent apply?
  • Which indications require another NDT method or engineering disposition?
