       Note:        

1.0     SCOPE / OBJECTIVES

This Method Statement covers the installation of Fire Hose Reels, Landing Valves and Fire Extinguishers. This procedure is to define the method used to ensure that Fire Hose Reels, Landing Valves and Fire Extinguishers installation has been carried out as per the contract requirements.

Drawing and Standard Sprinkler Installation Details should provide enough details for this installation. In the absence of any information the above documents should be consulted in the order shown.

  • ACCESS / EGRESS

Work will be carried out only when all associated works of the main contractor have been verified that they have been completed.

4.0     HEALTH AND SAFETY HAZARDS.

Implementation of Health & Safety mechanisms and checks as per Contract Agreement and the approved A&P Health & Safety Manual. The responsible Safety Officer for each building will conduct routine safety inspections.

  1. Safety Lighting.

     Safety lights will be used in case of power failure ensuring the good illumination of the working area for safe evacuation of the site.

  • Task Lighting.

Adequate lighting will be provided ensuring the good illumination of the working area. Task lighting will be connected to the nearest site distribution board which is RCD protected.

  • Emergency Arrangements.
  • General: Site general safety procedures will be followed. In case of emergency the Safety Officer will stop the work, he will put into action the emergency arrangements and report to assembly points as indicated during Site Induction Course.
  • Fire Precautions: No significant fire risk associated with this activity but general fire prevention measures will be taken as per Arabtec instructions to A&P.
  • Communication: Communication from work areas to Site Office via mobile phones issued to Senior foremen. In emergency situations the users of hand-held 2-way radios to be notified if deemed that this can speed up notification of relevant personnel and/or the JBR01 Site Clinic.

  • Environmental Considerations: After the finalization of the works the working area should be cleaned from any scrap materials related to the performed work.

5.0     DEFINITIONS

                       As to specifications (see references).

6.0     RESPONSIBILITIES / SUPERVISION

  • Project Manager – will have the overall responsibility of the Project for execution, quality and safety. Also he will maintain the planning progress and coordination of works with main contractor.
  • Project Senior Mechanical Engineer / Site Mechanical Engineer – will be responsible for the day to day activities on site, for materials, drawings, testing & commissioning and allocation of Departmental resources to work areas on Site. The Project Senior Mechanical Engineer will report to the Project Manager.
  • Supervisor – will be directly responsible for the day-to-day job on site, for handling the technicians or any other staff assign to his area.
  • QA/QC Department – will be overseeing all the quality requirements and quality control measures for the Project in coordination with the Senior Mechanical Engineer as outlined in the A&P QA Manual.
  • Safety Officer – will be responsible for the Health and Safety aspects on site as per the Mains Contractor and A&P Safety requirements.
  • PROCEDURES / METHOD TO BE EMPLOYED.
  • Pre – Ordering:

       Drawings must be prepared and approved.

  • Ordering:

Follow standard Unisafe procedures for ordering of Sprinklers, Pipes & Fittings.

  • Factory manufacture.

       By supplier.

  • Material and Type of Joints (Pipe Work):

7.5.1   Pipes as per ASTM A 53 GR.B Sch.40 – Galvanised ERW.

7.5.2   Fittings Up to 50mm – Threaded End.

7.5.2   Fittings 65 mm and Above – Grooved End.

7.3     Method

7.3.1   Preparation of Work

Before commencing the installation of the fire hose reel, fire extinguishers and fire cabinets the following shall be carried out.

7.3.2   On receipt of pipes & fittings, fire hose reels, fire extinguishers and fire cabinets storage shall be arranged at site as per manufacturer’s recommendations so as to prevent any physical damage to the material.       

7.3.3   Check approved materials are available for installation.

7.3.4Check for “Issued for Construction” drawings are used for installation.

7.3.5   Check work area is clean and safe for work.

7.3.6   Ensure installation work is under taken only by trained and experienced personnel.

7.4     Installation

7.4.1   Installation of Distribution Pipe works – First Fix

.2    Determine the position of the pipe supports and mark out on the concrete surface for fire hose reels.

.3    Drill holes in the concrete using portable electric drilling machine ensuring correct drill bit size is used.

.4    Fix supports in position using anchor bolts and ensure all fixing are tight and secure.

.5    Place pipes in position, if required using lifting hoists / straps and chain blocks

.6    Assemble the pipes using screwed fittings / bolting the flanges of pipes / grooved couplings.

.7    Ensure appropriate sealing compound/gaskets/lubricant are used for assembling of the pipes.

.8    After installation of the pipe for fire hose reels, check for correct leveling, position and alignment.

.9    Install temporary cap to any open ends of pipes before leaving the work place everyday.

7.5     Installation of fire hose, fire extinguishers and cabinets – Second Fix

  • Install fire hose reels cabinets along with fire extinguishers according to the approved shop drawing.
  • Ensure that the cabinets securely and rigidly mounted by anchor bolts on the civil base constructed for the purpose.
  • Local Alarm Control Panel and Interface cabling
  • The pressure switch and limit switch of the control valves shall be connected to the local alarm control panel located in the technical room of each area.
  • Cabling inside the technical room to be surface run
  • All Cables to the terminated and checked for continuity/insulation resistance.
  •   Pressure Testing of the Pipe works
  • The complete piping of the system including the header and distribution pipe works shall be hydrostatically tested for line gradient and water tightness at 200 PSI for 2 hrs. in accordance with contract specifications 15510 and NFPA 13 clause with no permissible leakage.
  • Flushing of the Pipe works
  • After pressure testing of the pipe works, the complete piping shall be flushed clean by potable water.
  • The flushing water flow shall be maintained as long as the water coming out of the pipe is not clear and devoid of any solid matter.
  • Installation of fire hose reels/landing valve
  • After leak testing and flushing of the piping, the     hose reel and landing valves shall be installed in accordance with contract specification 1105/SP/M-15510.
  • Ensure correct hose reels, landing valve, fire extinguishers are  fitted at specified locations as per the layout drawing.

7.10    Final Painting and Identification

7.10.1  Paint touch-up of the system pipe works/supports shall be   carried out at places where paint damages have occurred using approved paint system.

7.10.2  Identification labels shall be provided as appropriate

7.11    Inspection

7.11.1  Inspection requests shall be raised for client for inspection at various stages.

7.11.2  Inspection shall be carried out as per the relevant check sheet. (Ref: M-3.3.01.CS01)

          8.0     TRAINING

8.1  Tradesmen performing the described work will be experienced technicians. If deemed necessary specific team / individuals will undergo further training and awareness programs for this activity by the Production / Quality Assistance Departments.

  • Toolbox talks will provide general training and awareness for each activity and also in Health & Safety matters and precautions.

          9.0     WORKING HOURS

Normal working hours: 7.00 a.m to 5.00 pm

          10.0    HOUSE KEEPING

          In all work places where A&P personnel are working will be cleaned from the scrap materials derived from their work ensuring clean and healthy work environment as well as to maintain free access and egress in the event of emergency.

11.0    MANPOWER REQUIREMENT & SUPERVISION

Manpower requirement & supervision depends upon the planning organization chart and site progress of works.
