1.0       Purpose

  1. To ensure that all excavation and foundation preparation of Box Culvert activities are executed safely and in accordance with the contract requirements and that all quality assurance / control activities are conducted in a systematic manner, works are inspected and conformance is verified and documented.

2.0       Scope Of  Work

  • This procedure is applicable to the following works associated with the project titled, New 2k Runway – Main Runway Works”- contract number NRTW-1008-CN
  • Excavation and foundation preparation of all types of Box Culverts including storm  water carrier pipe to Box Culver Catchpits.

7.0       Safety

  • Prior to the commencement of any activities, the workforce will receive an induction talk on the project site safety requirements. The Job Hazard Analysis related to this activity is attached to this method statement. This induction talk will include both the JHA issues, as well as general safety requirements.
  • The necessary safety measures will be taken to prevent accident or injury at all times. This may include barriers, warning tape/net, signage, watchman, Flashing and Rotating lights at night.
  • Where work upon existing services may be required, the necessary work permits and safety equipment should be obtained prior to the activity commencement.
  • ES&H will ensure that Personal Protective Equipment is worn by site personnel at all times during construction activities.
  • Heat Stress Training will be provided.
  • Provisions of adequate cool drinking water, shade, and salt tablets will be in place.
  • Plant & Equipment will be provided with back-up alarms, lights, and all other applicable safety devices.
  • For AOA work, safety requirements as defined in Project Specification, Section 107, will be implemented. Specific safety training will be provided to personnel for AOA work.

8.0       Prior Activities

  • The Surveyor will locate and mark all live services that are present in the site (This includes above ground services as well as buried services). These services (Electric, Telephone, Gas, Oil, Chemical, Water, etc) will be clearly marked using stakes and warning tapes. Near these services, only manual excavation is permitted.
  • Limits of the areas to be excavated as shown on drawings will be clearly marked with stakes, tape, or bright paint.
  • Final approval of Box Culvert level details should be obtained from the Engineer, through the shop drawings submittal.
  • Procedure

   9.1  Trenches for Box Culvert shall be excavated to the lines and grades indicated on the 

   approved shop drawings by using Excavator as per clause 201.2.1

   9.2 Excavations dimensions will allow for the necessary working distance around the structure to permit the erection and removal of scaffolding and formwork (approx. 2m from concrete edge).

   9.3 The excavated materials shall be removed by dumper trucks as per clause 201.2.5 

9.4 The bottom of excavation shall be watered, leveled and compacted.

9.5 Bottom level of excavation and compaction will then be checked for approval by the Engineer’s Inspectors before any further activities are carried out as per clause 201.2.8

10.0   Responsibilities

  1. The CM will coordinate with SE to ensure that the necessary resources to implement the approved Method Statement and the JHA have been allocated to the task.
  1. The SE will ensure that the site preparation activities are conducted according to the approved Method Statement and the related JHA.
  1. The ME will ensure that the materials being used are in accordance to the Project Specifications, the approved Method Statement and the related inspection and testing plan.
  1. The ESHO officer, along with his team, will ensure implementation of all ES&H procedures related to the nature of the works being carried out for compliance with the Project Safety Plan and JHA.
