1.0 SCOPE / OBJECTIVES
This Method Statement covers the installation of the Busbar System. This procedure is to define the method used to ensure that the Busbar trunking has been installed as per the contract requirement.

Work will be carried out only when all associated works of Main Contractor have been verified as completed.
4.0 HEALTH AND SAFETY HAZARDS.
Health and Safety procedure by Main Contractor and by A&P will be implemented for this job. The responsible safety officer as per A&P procedure will conduct routine safety inspections.
- Safety Lighting.
Safety lights will be used in case of power failure ensuring the good illumination of the working area to aid evacuation if necessary.
- Task Lighting.
Adequate lighting will be provided ensuring the good illumination of the working area. Task lighting, where required will consist of tripod mounted fluorescent light.

- Emergency Arrangements.
- General: Site general safety procedures will be followed. In case of emergency the safety officer / foreman will stop the work. He will administer the emergency arrangements and report to assembly points as described during the Site Induction Course.
- Fire Precautions: No significant fire risks associated with this activity but general fire precaution measures will be taken as per Arabtec instructions to A&P.
- Communication: Communication from site areas to Site Office via mobile phones issued to senior foremen. In emergency situations the users of handheld 2-way radios and/or mobile phones to be notified if deemed that this can speed up notification of relevant personnel and/or the JBR01 Site Clinic.

- Environmental Considerations: After the finalization of the works the working area will be cleared of waste materials related to the performed work in a daily basis.
5.0 DEFINITIONS

6.0 RESPONSIBILITIES / SUPERVISION
- Project Manager – will have the overall responsibility of the Project for execution, quality and safety. Also he will maintain the planning progress and coordination of works with the Main Contractor.
- Project Senior Electrical Engineer / Site Electrical Engineer – will be responsible for the day to day activities on site, for materials, drawings, testing & commissioning. The Project Senior Electrical Engineer will report to the Project Manager.
- Supervisor – will be directly responsible for the day-to-day job on site, for handling the technicians or any other staff assign to his area.
- QA/QC Department – will oversee the quality assurance requirements and quality control measures for the Project in coordination with the Senior Electrical Engineer as per the approved Project Quality Documents.
- Safety Officer – will be responsible for the Health and Safety aspects on site as per the Main Contractor and A&P Safety requirements.
- PROCEDURES / METHOD TO BE EMPLOYED.
- Prepare and submit required materials for approval.
- Prepare and submit shop drawings for approval as per section 1105/SP/E-16477. Make sure that proper planning and coordination between trades has been taken place.
- Procure and deliver approved materials.
- Offer materials for inspection to ATC/HYDER. Proceed if approved.
HANDLING
- Follow the manufacturer’s handling instructions for the specific equipment.
- Handle busduct with care to avoid damage to internal components, enclosure or its finishing. Avoid subjecting busduct to twisting, denting, impact and in general rough handling.
- Do not use busbar ends for lifting busduct sections or fittings.
- When the busducts are received, unpack them sufficiently to inspect it for concealed damage and to determine that the shipment is complete and correct.
- If busducts are to be stored for any length of time prior to installation, restore the packing for protection during that period. Where conditions permit, leave the packing intact until the sections or fittings are at their final installation location.
- Know the capabilities of the moving means available to handle the weight of the sections or fittings.
- Use platform dollies for moving busduct on one floor level. Balance the load carefully.
- Platform lifts or elevators, either manually or power operated, can be used advantageously in moving loads of busducts between elevations.
STORAGE
- Busduct sections and fittings, which are not to be installed and energized immediately, will be stored in a clean dry space having a uniform temperature to prevent condensation. Preferably they should be stored in a building having adequate air circulation and protected from dirt, fumes, water and physical damage.
- Busducts should not be stored outdoors. However if it must be installed outdoors, cover it securely to provide protection from weather, dirt and condensation.
INSTALLATION
- Provide sufficient horizontal and vertical clearance from walls and ceilings to provide easy access to joints.
- Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
- Care must be observed during unpacking. Band cutters will be used on all banding securing the package.
- Nail platters will be used for unpacking wooden crates to avoid damage.
- Any support blocks will be removed, which may have been used for shipping.
- If crane is used to install the busducts, use nylon straps and distribute or balance the weight of each lift. If cables are used, spreaders should be used to avoid damage to the busducts metal housing. Prior hosting of the bus ducts consult manufacturer’s manual.
- Do not drag the busduct across the floor.
- When installing vertical sections, lower the busducts from the floor above.
- For the vertical installation of the busduct plan the necessary spacing required for the busduct including cable entry box, the largest tap – off unit etc. Use one of the edges of the busduct housing as the reference line, drop a heavy pendulum line from the highest floor down to the floor where the busduct starts and mark a dark line on the wall. The edge of the busduct housing should follow this line when joined. The housing to be at list 50mm away from the wall so that in case the wall is uneven the busduct can still be joined in straight line. Use the spring support hanger recommended by the manufacturer.
- Clean, flat and parallel the two sections of joint. Do not use force to join the two sections of busducts if they are not in line to facilitate a good joint.
- Secure the spring hanger support by following the manufacturer’s instructions. Always check to ensure that no fastener is left untightened or missing. Tighten to the recommended torque.
- Level and plumb the busducts (align vertically and horizontally) before the final tightening of all joints.
- Prepare the vertical rods and horizontal hangers or supports for the horizontal installation of busducts. Ensure that the vertical rods are of sufficient strength to support the weight of busducts with extra safety margin.
- The horizontal hanger support must be at the same level through out. Cut the vertical rods slightly longer.
- Identify every tag number of each busduct as per the shop drawings. Lift the busduct sections up on the support hangers.
- Ensure that the joint contact surfaces remain clean. Then use joint pullers to join the busducts. Always check if the busducts are in horizontal line by pulling a string from end to end.
JOINT ASSEMBLY
- Ensure that all contact surfaces are clean and free of contaminants.
- Align the busbar ends of adjoining sections, verifying proper phase alignment, and slide the sections together. If the bus ducts are heavy a chain block will be used to assist joining. Take care not to damage the busbar insulation and barrier plates.
- Follow manufacturer’s instructions for proper completion of the joint assemblies and tighten the joint bolt to the required torque as shown on the label at the joint plate.
- Ensure allowance for expansion and contraction.(15mm or as recommended by the manufacturer)
- Mark “OK” and the date beside the joint nut so that is known the work is done and completed.
- Inspect visually the joint bus bars or splice plates phase by phase. They must not shown signs that they are under mechanical strain e.g. bend, curve or out of alignment.
PROTECTION
- The busduct will be properly covered during installation to be protected from moisture, plaster or other types of contaminants.
GROUNDING
- Properly bond the busduct according to the DEWA regulation.
MOUNTING PLUG-IN DEVICES
- The manufacturer’s instructions will be followed for the proper mounting of plug-in devices.
- Sufficient clearances will be allowed to install, operate and remove devices and open covers when necessary.
- All plug-in openings that are not used will be covered.
- All tap off or plug-in devices will be in the “OFF” position during mounting.
- Ensure that TAP –OFF units will not be possible to be removed from the bus duct when it is at “ON” position.(Check interlocking)
PROTECTION FROM LIQUIDS, MOISTURE AND OTHER CONTAMINANTS.
- During construction care will be taken to protect the bus ducts from moisture and from uncompleted roofs, walls etc.
- Floor level liquids – 100mm concrete curbs should be installed around all floor openings (provided by main contractor) to prevent floor level liquids from entering the opening.
STEPS TO BE TAKEN BEFORE ENERGIZING
- All joint connections will be re checked for tightness to the manufacturer’s torquing recommendations.
- Ensure that all joint covers are properly fitted.
- All tap-offs or plugs will be re checked to ensure that they are in the “OFF” position.
- The bus duct runs will be isolated by disconnecting all connections to switchboards.
- An insulation resistance test will be carried out with an insulation resistance tester.(1000V DC)
- It will be verified that the system phasing matches the busduct phasing before reconnecting all connections to switchboards.
- Prior installation each bus bar length should be Megger tested at 1000V DC.
- Ensure that the bus bar after test is discharged to grounding system prior installation.
- The equipment will be energized in sequence by starting at the source end of the system and working toward the load end.
- Under full site conditions load each bus bar run should be infrared/thermographically being tested.
- TRAINING
8.1 The tradesmen who will be used to perform the described work will be experienced electricians. If deemed necessary specific teams / individuals will undergo further training by the Production / Quality Assistance Departments.
- Toolbox talks will provide general training and awareness for each activity as well as in Health & Safety matters and precautions.
- WORKING HOURS
Normal working hours: 7.00 am to 5.00 pm
- HOUSE KEEPING
A&P personnel will clear work areas of waste materials derived from their work on a daily basis ensuring a clean and healthy work environment and also to maintained free access and egress in the event of an emergency.
- MANPOWER REQUIREMENT & SUPERVISION
The calculated manpower requirement for the supervision & installation of the busducts is one (1No) Supervisor, six (6No) electricians and two (2No) labourers.
- MATERIAL REQUIRMENT
Material requirement for this activity are : Bus duct, drills, raw-bolts, “C” metal profiles, threaded rods, levels, tension torques, mobile lifts.
- PLANT & EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS
- General: Drills, Tensions Torques, Hammer, Plier, Screw Drivers, Mobile Hoist, Chain Block.

- Personnel Protective equipment: All personnel should wear at all time safety shoes, helmet and coverall, protective glasses and gloves.
- Power: Single-phase normal power where it is needed.
