A counterfort retaining wall is a type of reinforced concrete retaining wall that uses vertical concrete columns or counterforts to resist the lateral pressure of the soil behind it. The counterforts are attached to the wall slab with steel reinforcement and act as buttresses to support the wall and distribute the load.
The purpose of a counterfort retaining wall is to provide stability and structural support to prevent soil or other materials from moving downhill. They are commonly used in commercial and industrial projects, as well as residential applications.
There are two types of counterfort retaining walls:
- Vertical face counterfort retaining wall: In this type of wall, the counterforts are located on the backside of the wall and extend vertically from the base to the top of the wall.
- Stepped counterfort retaining wall: In this type of wall, the counterforts are located on the backside of the wall and extend vertically from the base to the height of the steps.
The criteria for using a counterfort retaining wall include:
- Wall height: Counterfort retaining walls are suitable for walls up to about 25-30 feet high.
- Soil type: Counterfort retaining walls are suitable for cohesive soils and soils with low permeability. They may not be suitable for loose or unstable soils.
- Load bearing capacity: The wall must be able to withstand the weight of the material it is holding back, as well as any additional loads placed on it.
- Water table: If the water table is high, proper drainage must be provided to prevent water from accumulating behind the wall, which could increase the pressure on the wall.
Counterfort retaining walls can be used in a variety of applications, including:
- Commercial and industrial projects: Counterfort retaining walls are commonly used in commercial and industrial projects, such as for retaining walls along highways or in large building complexes.
- Residential projects: Counterfort retaining walls can be used in residential applications, such as for retaining walls in terraced gardens or for building basement walls.
- Landscaping: Counterfort retaining walls can be used for landscaping projects, such as for creating raised garden beds or terraced garden areas.
